War! What Is It Good For?

This course takes a look at the moving stories of war from WWI, WWII and Vietnam. We will explore stories from poems like “Anthem for Doomed Youth”, from speeches like “We Will Fight Them on the Beaches” and from films like “Saving Private Ryan.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • World War I: This week we will concentrate on stories from the Great War which was hoped to end all wars. Poems will include Wilfred Owen’s “Anthem for Doomed Youth” and Laurence Binyon’s “For the Fallen” and films such as “Gallipoli”
  • World War II: Just twenty years after WWI the Second World War engulfed the globe. Speeches of WWII will be featured such as “Never was so much owed to so many by so few” by Churchill and the “Infamy” speech by Roosevelt. Films will include Saving Private Ryan.
  • Vietnam: Vietnam was a hot war with and without honour. Poems will include Bruce Dawe’s “Homecoming”, films will include “Apocalypse Now” and speeches will include “Be-yond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence by Martin Luther King Jr

PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Identify and discuss the predominant concerns associated with each war event.
  2. Explore the literary techniques that enable authors to effective convey their intent to an audience.
  3. Be familiar with the major events of the wars and how they impacted participants.
