Explore the different characteristics of colours, and how to build up layers of paint to maintain transparency, yet achieve strong and vibrant colours and learn about glazing to create colour intensity. Using a limited range of 6 primary colours (warm and cool), create your own watercolour charts of 450 colours, enabling easy mixing and matching of almost any botanical colour. Learn about colour harmony and primary, secondary and complimentary colours. Make your colours sing! Class and individual demonstrations and tuition. All skill levels welcome. Preprinted colour charts available.


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Identify primary, tertiary and complimentary colours
  2. Apply translucent layers of colours to achieve varying degrees of depth
  3. Use tonal colours for interest and information
  4. Identify and use complimentary colours
  5. Use glazing to create colour intensity
  6. Make shadow colours from limited palette
  7. Use different size brushes for different areas and techniques
  8. Achieve brush and water control while painting
  9. Mix and match almost any colour using charts painted in class


MATERIALS LIST

  • Winsor & Newton brand Artists' Quality watercolour paints recommended. 5ml tubes The Winsor colours are more transparent and less expensive. The cadmium colours are stronger, richer in colour and semi-transparent. Both are lightfast and permanent. Try to use the Preferred colours as these will achieve the best result. Bring all colours you already have.
    • Cadmium Lemon (Alternate: Bismuth Yellow)
    • Cadmium Yellow (Alternate: New Gamboge)
    • Cadmium Red (Alternate: Winsor Red)
    • Permanent Rose
    • French Ultramarine (Alternate: Winsor Blue [Red Shade])
    • Cerulean Blue (Alternate: Winsor Blue [Green Shade])
    • Burnt Sienna
    • Burnt Umber
  • Sable Brushes: Size 3 and 5. Bring other sizes if you have them. Kolinsky sable brushes preferred. No designer or rigger brushes (the hairs are too long)
  • Soft cotton cloth
  • Two water containers, plastic or glass
  • Paper towels and tissues
  • Palette (ceramic or plastic). Divided Asian sauce dishes are suitable and inexpensive
  • Two A4 sheet Arches 300gsm hot pressed (smooth) watercolour paper. Smallersize pieces will be cut from these for testing colours.

Note: 3 x A4 Pre-Printed Watercolour Charts will be supplied at $2.50 per sheet.


IMPORTANT: Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.
