Explore the wonderful world of villainy in literature! There is a plethora of villains to be found in novels, plays, poetry and graphic stories. We will have a lot of fun meeting the villains and identifying their stories, their memorable quotes and their worthiness to be in the hall of shame. You may want to come armed with a list of your own favourite villains – have their name, their text and their author – but this is optional.


COURSE OUTLINE

  • What makes a villain? And master criminals extraordinaire such as Moriarty
  • Mad scientists, megalomaniacs and Machiavellian nasties such Dr Hyde
  • Wicked women with evil on their minds such as Lady Macbeth
  • Purely evil doers who wreak havoc on all such as Satan.


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Identify and discuss the enormous scope and range of villains as depicted across the genres of literature and time
  2. Differentiate between character types and motivational imperatives
  3. Gain a greater repertoire of literature to access for leisure and further reading.
