Unruly Women: Bad Girls Who Made History

Join us to honour those wonderful unruly and noisy women who have challenged the patriarchy, and refused to be silent and subservient: They women who conquered the gendered expectations of women in the public space, in politics, science, religion, literature, the arts, business and more.


COURSE OUTLINE

  • Unruly women of politics and social and economic reform, including Hillary Clinton, Lucrezia Borgia, Sophie Scholl, Agrippina the Younger, Anne Boleyn and Isabella of France (queen to Edward II)
  • Unruly women of sciences, the arts and literature including Ada Lovelace, Rosalind Franklin, Margaret Cavendish and Hedy Lamar
  • Our own Australian unruly women including Germaine Greer, Anne Summers, Wendy McCarthy and Louisa Lawson


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Celebrate the achievements of a vibrant cross section of historical and contemporary noisy and unruly women.
  2. Appreciate the constraints which operated against the women and how they overcame those constraints and the narrow societal expectations of their lives and times.
