“Good urban design” is something which architects and planners are always waxing on about – and telling us that it is something which is good for us. But what is it exactly? Case studies of good and bad examples will be examined, including those of great urban design achievements from other times and other places. If time and logistical realities permit, a field trip in down-town Sydney will provide an opportunity for an assessment of some real-world examples of the good and the bad, and for class members to gain confidence in evaluating urban design projects in their own localities. The final session will include a chance for the whole class to collaborate on a hypothetical design project for a well-known Sydney site.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • How do we achieve good urban design in our urban places?
  • What are its constituents?
  • Who actually does the ‘designing’?
  • Can we have good urban design without input from the professionals?
  • How do you distinguish between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ design?
  • Can history help us to understand this concept?
  • Can the ordinary citizen play a part in the design process?
