People get sick, include those you care about and those whose care is entrusted to you. In order to empathise properly, but also to have intelligent and constructive conversation with those people involved in their care, you need to have a certain level of medical knowledge. This course is delivered by an experienced medical doctor, and will give you the knowledge needed to understand common but often debilitating medical conditions, such as heart attacks, strokes, diabetes and cancer.


COURSE OUTLINE

  • Common medical conditions, e.g. heart attack, stroke, diabetes.
  • Very basic medical background of these conditions, e.g. basic anatomy and physiology, as well as basic pathophysiology.
  • The way in which a hospital is structured, with different levels of doctors from consultant down to medical student. Includes the different levels of hospitals and how transfers are organised.
  • How to communicate with health professionals, including doctors, nurses and allied health.
  • Very basic life support.


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Understand the common medical conditions and have the medical knowledge to describe them to another non-health professional.
  2. Describe the causes of common medical conditions and how they are treated.
  3. Appreciate how a hospital is structured, and the basic roles of different health professionals.
  4. Learn communication strategies to help obtain information from health professionals.
  5. Have a very basic understanding of CPR.
