2021: The Year in Review

2021 has been another eventful year – and 2022 will be equally eventful. This year's review will cover five big issues on five days:

  • The Death of Democracy: Does democracy die from suicide rather than murder? - People are voting more but enjoying it less. There is now "democracy fatigue" as people lose faith in democracy. Meanwhile governments are becoming more authoritarian.
  • The Return of Inflation: The cost of coping with COVID? - Inflation has not been around in western countries for some decades; younger Australians do not know of the dramas of the 1970s. But now there is concern that inflation could return: governments are printing unprecedented sums of money to pay for COVID plans, there are disruptions to the global supply chain, and environmentalists are warning of a looming resource crisis.
  • New Ways of Working: An end to "9 to 5"? - Coping with COVID has accelerated changes in work practices, such as working from home. Some changes were already underway and now there are even more. The changes are also being driven by computers and a new outlook on life among younger employees.
  • International Co-operation in Decline: Is it now every country for itself? - The great hope of the post-World War II era was that countries would work together more to solve common problems. But the lack of international co-operation over COVID, climate change, and economic development suggests that the current era of leaders are not as enthusiastic for international co-operation as their forebears. Why are we heading back to the 1930s?
  • Is Donald Trump on the Way Back? - November 2022 will see the US Congressional “mid-term” elections - the next big electoral test for Trump’s attempted return to power in 2024. Will he maintain his grip over the Republican Party? Will he be attractive to a majority of voters? Will litigation, lawsuits, and potential punishment derail his return?
