The Rise of ISIS

ISIS, ISAL or DAESH are all names we recognise as the name of the movement of fundamentalist Muslims who stormed into power in the Middle East and created much chaos and destruction until their eventual battlefield defeat in 2019. But they have not disappeared. Why did they arise, what did they want to achieve and how successful were they? Do they have a future?

COURSE OUTLINE

  • From al Qaida to ISIS: This lesson traces the rise of Muslim extremism in the Middle East and Persia and how, after the defeat of Saddam Hussein, Muslim extremists were able to enter the scene vacated to a great degree by al Qaida.
  • The rise of ISIS and the near conquest of Iraq and Syria: From 2014 until 2019 ISIS controlled parts of Iraq and Syria to a greater of lesser degree. We look at their rise, their government and the establishment of the Caliphate. What was life like under ISIS? How did the world react?
  • The long road back: Iraqi and Syrian troops, assisted by Kurds and an alliance of many countries began the long fight back, at times fighting each other as much as ISIS. How did this war progress and how was the caliphate destroyed?
  • The defeat of ISIS on the battlefield and dealing with the mess that followed: The world has to deal with the survivors of the war, including ISIS fighters and their families, as well as the wholesale destruction caused to Syria and parts of Iraq. We look at what ISIS is doing now and how and if they will transfer to an underground war against their enemies in the Middle East and in the West.
