Discover how to give the illusion of reality in your painting. Learn how to create the sensation of light, atmosphere and space through observing tone. You will gain practical experience on how to observe tone through various exercises and add atmosphere to your work.


COURSE OUTLINE

  • Learn to observe light by studying a still-life in oils.
  • Start with a study in monochrome and finish with a study in colour.
  • Learn to see what is there rather than what we think is there.
  • Eliminate detail with surprisingly realistic results.
  • Be shown how to block in colour, then how to model and mix in-between tones.
  • Class and individual demonstrations.
  • Constructive appraisal during lessons.


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Learn how to use a brush as a measuring tool to get proportion.
  2. Learn to observe light and tonal values for more realistic results.
  3. How to get placement of tones through blocking in and mix in-between tones where needed.
  4. Learn how to mix colours tonally.
  5. Learn about the importance of value, hue and chroma.
  6. Understand the importance of tone, proportion and temperature.


MATERIALS LIST

  • Palette
  • Palette knife
  • 2 Canvas boards 10x12" or larger (10x14" or 12x16") whatever feels comfortable.
  • Flat brushes or Long Flat preferred, size 4 and 6 plus your own brushes.
  • Odourless solvent (MUST be Odourless)
  • Rags or paper towels.

Recommended Oil Colours

  • Titanium White or Zinc White
  • Ivory Black
  • Alizarin Crimson or Rose Madder or Permanent Rose (Hue will do)
  • Yellow Ochre
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Lemon Yellow

Optional Oil Colours

  • Cadmium Yellow
  • Cadmium Red
  • Cerulean Blue (Hue will do)


IMPORTANT: Please arrive to the first class with all the relevant materials. A lack of materials is not just a handicap to you but to the ability to teach. Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.
