Explore the fascinating developemnt of Russian music from the early 19th century to 1918. Beginning with Glinka, Russia’s first internationally recognized composer, the course will be centred on the great composers of the later 19th century: Borodin, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky, and continue with the two outstanding figures of the early 20th century: Rachmaninoff and Stravinsky. Instrumental and vocal music will be included, with opera and ballet DVDs.


COURSE OUTLINE

  • The music of Glinka, Borodin, and Mussorgsky – Chamber music, ‘Prince Igor’, ‘In the Steppes of Central Asia’, ‘Night on Bare Mountain’ and ‘Boris Godunov’.
  • Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky – ‘Russian Easter Overture’, ‘Sheherazade’, ‘Eugene Onegin’, ‘The Nut-cracker’, Church music, Songs, Symphonies, Concertos
  • Rachmaninoff and Stravinksy – Piano concertos, Church music, ‘The Fire-bird’, 'Petrouchka'
