The Libretto: the Unsung Hero/Heroine of Opera

Verdi could compose an opera in weeks but spend months on the libretto. Is that because the libretto is more important than we think? In this course, we’ll examine how libretti shape an opera and suggest music. We’ll get a practical understanding of the value of libretti and how delving into this craft can enhance appreciation of the operatic artform. We’ll study librettists such as Cammarano (Lucia di Lammermoor), Piave (Rigoletto), Boito (Otello), Hofmannsthal (Der Rosenkavalier) and Illica (La boheme) and composer-librettists such as Wagner, but also write a libretto ourselves and begin the process of setting it to music.
