The History of Syria

Today, Syria is caught up in a tragic civil war. Long ruled by autocrats, its people sought a new, democratic beginning in the Arab Spring of 2011. Unfortunately, this was hijacked by many groups, including ISIS and then, after that war, Syria was thrown back into Ba’athist dictatorship and suppression of its many minorities. Standing at the gateway to the Middle East, it attracts the attention of major powers like Russia and the United States. This course looks at Syria's long history from ancient times through to the present, with an emphasis on the last two centuries
