Thai Beginners 1

This course is an introduction to Thai for students with no previous knowledge of the language and who wish to learn the language for business, travel or everyday use. Students will develop basic skills to use in conversation, listening, reading and writing.

Nine sessions that aim to build general basic comprehension and communication skills in elementary Thai.

Conversational Thai and an introduction to cultural practices, with a focus on clear explanation of basic language principles.

Topics (as related to textbook)

  • A short history of the language
  • Formal and informal greetings
  • Terms of address
  • Introducing oneself
  • Frequently used question words
  • Basic action words
  • Basic description words
  • Cardinal and ordinal numbers
  • Dates and times

Grammar (as covered in textbook topics)

  • Basic alphabets
  • Pronunciations of consonants, vowels and five tones
  • Possessive
  • Negative

Grammar is introduced in action with example, context and usage. Handouts for homework accompanying the lessons will be provided. They are not compulsory, nevertheless very useful for written practice.

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Speak clearly and be understood in basic Thai.
  2. Demonstrate the skills, language and attitudes required for further study of Thai.

If you are a new WEA Student and enrol into a language class and subsequently find that you are at the wrong level (whether too high or too low), you are permitted to transfer into another more suitable class at no additional cost, provided that the request is made within the first two classes and is in writing from your tutor directly to the Education Manager. After that point, an administration fee of $30 will apply.
