Travelling the Blues Highway 61: A Musical Journey
Journey to the origins of the Blues in Memphis and Mississippi. Visit Beale Street, the Stax Museum and Gracelands; before travelling to the grave sites of Robert Johnson, BB King, Albert King and others.
This class will be delivered face-to-face at WEA Sydney. Enrolling students need to ensure they have read the current COVID-19 Safety Guidance that WEA Sydney has put in place before enrolling.

- The origins of Blues Music in Mississippi
- The impact of country Blues on the Genre - Charley Patton and Robert Johnson
- A tour of Memphis - the “Blues Town”, Sun Records, Gracelands and Beale Street
- Down Highway 61 - a look at Memphis Minnie, Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters and more
- The Muddy Waters impact - a look at the Delta Blues Museum
- Blues of the North Country
- The influences of Blues on Rock and the British Beat Groups
PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Appreciate the origins of Blues music and its effects on other forms of popular music.
- Understand the importance of Mississippi and its history in the formation of Blues.
- Know the main travel destinations in a Blues tour of the American South.
- Plan a meaningful travel experience travelling down the “Blues Highway”.
- Know the Blues styles of some of the major original artists in this genre.
