Travelling the Blues Highway 61: A Musical Journey

Journey to the origins of the Blues in Memphis and Mississippi. Visit Beale Street, the Stax Museum and Gracelands; before travelling to the grave sites of Robert Johnson, BB King, Albert King and others.

This class will be delivered face-to-face at WEA Sydney. Enrolling students need to ensure they have read the current COVID-19 Safety Guidance that WEA Sydney has put in place before enrolling.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • The origins of Blues Music in Mississippi
  • The impact of country Blues on the Genre - Charley Patton and Robert Johnson
  • A tour of Memphis - the “Blues Town”, Sun Records, Gracelands and Beale Street
  • Down Highway 61 - a look at Memphis Minnie, Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters and more
  • The Muddy Waters impact - a look at the Delta Blues Museum
  • Blues of the North Country
  • The influences of Blues on Rock and the British Beat Groups

PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Appreciate the origins of Blues music and its effects on other forms of popular music.
  2. Understand the importance of Mississippi and its history in the formation of Blues.
  3. Know the main travel destinations in a Blues tour of the American South.
  4. Plan a meaningful travel experience travelling down the “Blues Highway”.
  5. Know the Blues styles of some of the major original artists in this genre.
