Writing stories is very exciting and satisfying – but how to find that idea and make it sound original? How to write it in a fresh and engaging manner? How to edit and polish it so that the finished story ‘works’ as a piece of literature? This course explores all this and more – learn to write stories that will satisfy you, the writer, and your readers.

Note: There will be short breaks for morning and afternoon tea and a break for lunch – lunch is NOT included.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Explore how to find ideas from inside yourself and from the world at large and how to brainstorm them into useful starting places for stories.
  • Examine techniques that improve writing such as use of imagery, punctuation, word selection and arrangement and how to avoid pitfalls like clichés, redundancies and banality.
  • Evaluate the characters and plot lines for effective tension and story development.
  • Write your own samples and have them evaluated.
