The Sounds and Sights of Summer: Music, Art, and Photography

Enjoy inspirational music depicting summer and its varied activities, accompanied by appropriate visual images in the form of paintings and photos. The musical and visual snapshots will focus on Vivaldi in Venice, Haydn in the Austrian countryside, Bach in Leipzig, Berlioz and Fauré in Paris, Debussy inspired by artistic and literary seascapes and the coast at Eastbourne, Ravel and the fountains of Versailles, Tchaikovsky in Russia, and Satie at Honfleur.


COURSE OUTLINE

  • Vivaldi and Venice – the concerto ‘Summer’ from ‘The Four Seasons’, the concerto for the Feast Day of San Lorenzo on August 10; Bach at Leipzig – the secular ‘Coffee’ and ‘Peasant’ cantatas; Haydn in the Austrian countryside – summer extracts from 'The Seasons'
  • Berlioz in Paris – extracts from the ‘Symphonie fantastique’ and the song cycle ‘Nuits d’été' (Summer Nights); Tchaikovsky – the summer months from the musical calendar for solo piano ‘Les Saisons’ – June, July, August; Fauré – incidental music for the plays ‘Pelléas et Mélisande’ (Maeterlinck) and ‘Shylock’ (Shakespeare) arranged as ‘Emeralds’ in the ballet ‘Jewels’ by Balanchine
  • Debussy and the sea – the symphonic poem ‘La Mer’ – literary and artistic seascapes (Monet Sunrise and its context) and Eastbourne; Ravel and water, the 'Jeux d’eau' – inspired by the fountains of Versailles – and the water sprite ‘Ondine’, Satie at Honfleur on the Normandy coast – his songs and piano pieces and the paintings of Boudin


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Appreciate the outstanding works studied in the course and their composers' intentions.
  2. Assess the achievements of the various composers in responding to the various stimuli provided by the sights and sounds of the summer season.
  3. Distinguish the individual stylistic characteristics of each composer.
  4. Evaluate the different performances heard in the chosen musical extracts.
