Spanish Conversation: "MAFALDA" - The World through the Eyes of a Classic Argentinian Cartoon Character

Join us in this journey across the fun (and also deep) comic strips in which Mafalda, a clever girl who loves to talk about politics and the reality she sees, is always leaving her mum and dad in stitches with her comments! Engage in fun and interesting discussions about politics, human behaviour, and the daily lives of the friends and relatives in Mafalda’s life. At the end of this short course, you should be able to create a Mafalda-like short comic strip to describe a situation or event in today’s world. This course is aimed at students with a Higher Intermediate level of Spanish that allows them to enjoy the short comic strips proposed and participate in the class discussions with some or little effort.


DELIVERY MODE
This class will be delivered online via the online platform Zoom. Classes will consist of a minimum of 1.5 hours virtual class time, together with 30 minutes worth of work to be completed independently. You will be able to contact your tutor by email or phone to ask for guidance and feedback on this work. In addition tutors may set additional homework. This course requires students to have an email, a reliable internet connection, a microphone/speakers and access to a tablet, smartphone or computer. Please note that WEA Sydney is unable to provide any technical support for students' personal equipment.


COURSE OUTLINE

  • Brief introduction to Quino, the Argentinian cartoon artist who created Mafalda
  • A short description of the setting of Mafalda’s stories and the lives of middle-class families in Buenos Aires
  • A description of Mafalda’s personality, as well as her relatives' and friends'
  • A group discussion about her vision of the world and How she perceives her reality and that of all the adults and children in her life


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Gain a better understanding of her personality and that of those around her, as well as the necessary vocabulary to discuss it in class.
  2. Expand both your language skills and your knowledge of the Spanish Speaking Cultures and
  3. Picture the reality of a middle-class family living in Buenos Aires at the time through her comic strips
  4. Create our own Mafalda-like comic strip and use it to describe similar situations and events in our current world after gaining a better understanding of hers and the other characters' personalities.
