Shugendo: Mountain Asceticism in Japan

Shugendo, is an ancient religion found all over Japan from early historic times. It formed around the seventh century just as Japan began to absorb the newly introduced foreign religions of Buddhism and Daoism. These new religions were imposed on existing folk religions and “mountain worship” practices. Join John McBride as he describes this fascinating ancient religion still practiced in the Japanese mountains.
