Explore the essence and meaning of Buddhism’s shortest and most enigmatic sacred text. We tease meaning out of the text, meditate on it, compare different versions and teachings and see how it is manifested and used in the lived traditions of Buddhism.


COURSE OUTLINE

  • Zen traditions: The history of the Sutra and how it has been transported and translated across the world.
  • The Dalai Lama and the sutra’s place in the Vajrayana: We study the Dalai Lama’s commentary on the sutra and look at how it is interpreted and applied in Tibetan Buddhism.
  • Popular culture and song: We look at and listen to different ways the text is re-interpreted as song and chant.
  • The meaning and use of mantra: Some experiential examination of the text’s enigmatic Sanskrit mantra.
  • Thich Nhat Hanh’s commentaries: examines the most popular use of the text in English and its meaning to functioning Buddhist communities outside Asia.


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Recognise some of the prajnaparimata perfection of wisdom texts and their importance in Buddhist history.
  2. Describe some of the ways we can use this text and how it has become such a popular sacred writing.
  3. See how influential the idea of_ Avalokitesvara_ is across the Mahayana Buddhist world.
  4. Discuss the many different translations into English and how they differ in meaning and style.
  5. Consider the importance of Xuanzang, Buddhist pilgrim and translator, and the Monkey stories that grew up around him.
