Learn about the history of these forests and woodlands that include Sydney’s Cumberland Plain Woodland, Blue Gum High Forest, Turpentine-Ironbark Forest, Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub and the Blue Mountains Hanging Swamps. Be staggered by how much has been lost but inspired by how much can be saved.

  • Sydney’s endangered ecological communities including Cumberland Plain Woodland (Sydney’s western plains), Blue Gum High Forest (Sydney’s northern ridges), Turpentine-Ironbark Forest (Sydney’s northern ridges), Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub (Sydney’s eastern coastal headlands), and Hanging Swamps (Lithgow’s Newnes Plateatu)
  • Threats of urban densification and climate change.
  • Commonwealth and NSW Governments protections for these endangered forests.
  • Latest National Parks Association of NSW, and other conservation groups' campaigns to protect Sydney’s endangered forests.


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to understand:

  1. the threats to Sydney’s endangered ecological communities.
  2. Current environmental legislation that protects Sydney’s endangered ecological communities.
  3. How environment groups are working to protect Sydney’s endangered forests and bushlands including the National Parks Association of NSW, the Nature Conservation Council of NSW and the Colong Foundation for Wilderness, Friends of Ku-ring-gai’s Environment, Sutherland Shire Environment Centre.
