For the world it was a three year struggle between communism, fascism and democracy. For Spain it was the brutal eruption of deep internal divisions between conservative Catholic country dwellers and progressive republican urbanites that tore a society apart. Overshadowed by the subsequent WWII it is often overlooked, despite some 15,000 books written about it. Yet it pays to give it some attention to gain an understanding of present-day Spain.
