Scandinavia: Landscapes, People, Culture

Long winters and short summers, Northern Lights and Midnight Sun, lakes, forests, mountains, fjords and islands. The Northern part of Europe not only boasts stunning landscapes and natural phenomena, but is also is home to a mix of 25 million North-Germanic, Finnic and indigenous peoples in an area slightly larger than New South Wales. We will explore the origins from hunter-gatherers to Vikings to modern industrialised and liberal societies, which regularly top world-wide rankings of best places to live. This eight week course will provide an overview of the various landscapes, as well as the history, politics, economics and cultural aspects of the five countries within this area: Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Iceland.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Finland: Linguistically not considered part of Scandinavia, but historically and politically closely tied to Sweden. Land of lakes, flies and Santa Claus.
  • Sweden: The Kingdom of the Three Crowns. Endless forests, snow and iron ore. The most populous of the Scandinavian countries
  • Denmark: The southernmost part of Scandinavia. And also its smallest – or largest, depending on geographical point of view.
  • Norway: Scenically undoubtedly the most spectacular of the Scandinavian countries boasting a rugged 25,000km coastline.
  • Iceland: Geysers, volcanoes and waterfalls. Home to ugged landscapes and the world’s oldest parliament.
