An introduction to Russian language and culture for any student wishing to approach Russian language for the very first time. Students will develop some reading and writing skills. This course is recommended for people wishing to learn reading Cyrillic characters as well as for those who wish to undertake further courses of Russian language.

CLASS PLAN
3 sessions of 3 hours each that aim to build general basic comprehension and communication skills in Russian.


CONTENT
Introduction to Russian culture, with a focus on clear explanation of basic language principles and grammar. No prior knowledge of Russian is required.


Session 1

  • The Cyrillic alphabet: theories on its foundation
  • Cyrillic alphabet and its history
  • Reading the Cyrillic alphabet
  • Familiarizing with phonemes and syllables
  • Stress and vowel reduction
  • Phonetic rules and exceptions

Session 2

  • Basic communication: greetings and introduction
  • Previous class revision
  • Using on-line dictionaries
  • Formal and informal greetings
  • Thanking and responding to thanking
  • Formal and informal communication in contemporary Russia

Session 3

  • Basic communication: identifying objects and persons
  • Focusing on gender: a grammar and a social matter
  • Introducing yourself: names and patronymics
  • Filling a form with necessary information
  • Travelling Russia: how, when and what


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Communicate in easily understood basic Russian.
  2. Read Cyrillic alphabet and basic Russian words.
  3. Increase the skills and the vocabulary necessary to continue studying Russian A1.
