Nero the artistic emperor of Rome is the epitome of the evil tyrant. Our sources depict a deprived and deranged ruler, who progressed from one atrocious act to another in his reign. Yet he was guided in his early years as emperor by the philosopher Seneca and the expert management of the head of the Praetorian guards, Burrus. There was a revival and a flourishing of the arts under his rule. The sources suggest that he was extremely popular with the Roman people.
