Relief Printing without a Press

Learn relief printmaking techniques to produce beautiful and original hand printed art works on paper. Woodblock and Lino cut are simple processes which get great results and are easy to continue at home. This practical course invites beginners through to advanced participants to join an experienced teacher and artist who will guide you through the lino carving and printing process using non-toxic water-based inks. Create a stunning body of work of unique prints in a short time for home. Printing will be done by hand (there is no printing press).

COURSE OUTLINE

  • How to cut relief prints
  • How to print without a press
  • How to choose suitable paper / lino / vinyl / cutting tools / inks / rollers / brayers
  • Learn a brief overview of relief printmaking

Returning students will learn a variety of techniques eg mono prints / overlays / stencilling / reduction prints and more.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Learn a variety of techniques for cutting a relief print.
  2. Learn a variety of techniques for printing a relief print without a press.
  3. Have an overview for choices of materials and tools used in relief printmaking.
  4. Know how to create relief prints without a press.

MATERIALS LIST

For classes that are held at WEA Sydney, $5 to cover use of studio equipment (paper, ink, rollers etc.) may be required at start of term.

  • Speedball relief print cutting tools (or similar)
  • 3 x A4 (approx) vinyl or lino print tiles. (Vinyl tiles are softer to cut).
  • Optional: An apron will save your clothes from any ink spills.

IMPORTANT: Please arrive to the first class with all the relevant materials. A lack of materials is not just a handicap to you but to the ability to teach. Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.
