Rapa Nui People & Culture: The Secrets of Easter Island

The enigmatic Easter Island is one of the most isolated islands on Earth. Located over 3700km from Chilean coast, this remote volcanic island is an archaeological treasure, which for generations has puzzled scientists, archaeologists and historians alike with mysteries surrounding its colossal stone moais, which are the lasting legacy of this ancient society. About 42% of the island is Rapa Nui National Park, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO (1995) to preserve the natural and cultural wonders of this Chilean territory. Nowadays the Rapa Nui (indigenous name) people which have a strong Polynesian roots, are proud to keep their language, music, dance, and countless traditions alive.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Brief introduction of Easter Island first settlement and its history: We will cover the theories about early settlement in the island, the phases of the Island culture where some important events happened; such as built and rebuilt of moais, and the massive deforestation of the island, triggering war, famine and as a result of this a cultural collapse. Then we will discuss about who where the first Europeans to arrive in the 18th century and when Easter Island was annexed to Chilean territory.
  • The Moais Statues and the Ceremonial Sites: We will examine the enigmatic Rapa Nui statues and the ceremonial sites that were built along the island. We will cover the most frequent questions about moais; such as when were they erected and why, how many were erected, how did they make them, how big are they.
  • Easter Island Today: We will cover interesting facts and general information about the island, and examine the main cultural and artistic aspects of this remote place on Earth; such as its people, language, gastronomy, traditions, rituals, the Tapati Festival, music, dances, myths and legends.
  • Highlights of Rapa Nui: We will discover the top sights and experiences to enjoy in the island and cover the most frequently asked question about the destination; such as how to get there, when to go, what to see and do, how to move around. And finally we will learn some basic words in the Rapa Nui language.
