Meet at Emu Plain Train Station Platform 2 (shops side) at 10.10am


At Emu Plains, we learn about the fascinating first contact encounters with the Darug, the power and bounty of the river; and the early efforts to feed the growing colony. Well-maintained tracks, parkland, street, road, some stairs, bridges.


Note to enrolling students: To get to Emu Plains you can take the 9:18am train from Central which arrives at 10.10am. We will return to the station in time for the 3:26pm train which arrives back at Central at 4:21pm.


The walk is about 5 hours long, and a level gradient. It is graded 2 as reasonable fitness is required (must be able to walk 12 kms). The tracks range from: well-maintained walking track; parkland; some stairs; bridges; street.

  • Walking shoes
  • Hat & sunscreen
  • Backpack with morning tea, lunch and drink – 1 to 2 litres of water
  • Clothing as befits the weather

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Watkin Tench and first explorations of the river. From his journals.
  • Indigenous pre-contact history. What can we know about traditional life along the river before European arrival?
  • Trees, plants, waterbirds and fish. What is native, what is introduced.
  • Early methods of crossing the river. Opening up the western settlements. Governor Macquarie, publican Toby Ryan, early travellers.
  • Challenges to human settlement from the river. Marvellous engineering solutions.
  • Challenges to the river from human settlement. Some solutions.
  • Should rivers have legal standing? (the NZ example).


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Feel the benefit of a medium level of exercise in fresh air and beautiful surrounds.
  2. Have an understanding of how the river has changed in the course of millenia, and since 1788.
  3. Gain knowledge of the natural environment of the river.
  4. Know more about the natural barriers to European settlement.
  5. Gain an appreciation of indigenous life.
