Historically the island gained notoriety after the legendary castaway from Daniel Defoe’s classic novel. Today, the isolated island is a trove of natural beauty declared a Biosphere Reserve, with rich marine biodiversity, rugged cliffs, pristine beaches, historical landmarks, and home to endemic species such as the Juan Fernández firecrown hummingbird and the friendly South American fur seal.
