Revisiting Classic Comic Poetry: Australian, English and American

Explore the wit and Wisdom of these great Masters, consider the social situations that produced them and learn something of the authors. There will be opportunities for class members to present their own favourites.


COURSE OUTLINE
We will revisit poems we have probably experienced in our early days and almost certainly see them with new, adult eyes. Time will be set aside for class members to favour us with the favourites.

  • Australian Poems – Selections from Banjo Patterson, John Obrien C.J. Dennis and Bruce Dawe and others.
  • British Poems – Selections from Lewis Carrol, Edward Lear, Hilaire Belloc, T.S Elliot and others.
  • American Poems – Selections from Ogden Nash, Don Maquis, Ira Gershwin T.E Cummins and others.


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Have a greater knowledge of the life and backgrounds of some of our great comic poets.
  2. Be more aware of the sources of humour in literature.
  3. Recognise the some of the social features that produce certain types of literature.
