Pen and Wash Sketching: Greens in the Landscape

Green is the colour of nature. There are an astonishing number of greens in the landscape. Explore various colour mixes; and achieve perspective and interest through compositions and focal points. Explore the method of using coloured pencils and watercolours combined to increase intensity and vibrancy in your sketch. Class and individual demonstrations. All skill levels.

Please be aware that you will need to bring some landscape-themed photographs.


  • Materials and Techniques. Comprehensive class demonstrations of both graphite pencil and watercolour painting techniques
  • Pen and Wash Techniques. Learn the process of using pen sketches with watercolour washes.
  • Compositions. Working with the rule of thirds, learn to create interesting and well balanced compositions.
  • Experiment with adding coloured pencils to watercolour washes to achieve intensity and increase tonal values.
  • Class and individual demonstrations
  • Discussion on various cold pressed papers and types of sketchbooks.
  • Class Appraisal. Completed work to be appraised by tutor with class discussions

By the end of this workshop the students should be able to:

  1. Understand the importance of composition, scale and focal points in the landscape
  2. Mix many different colours of greens using a limited palette of colour
  3. Mix various colours to create a range of browns for any landscape
  4. How to mix colours to make shadow colours for greens
  5. Create tonal contrast and increase colour intensity
  6. Use the Rule of Thirds to achieve interesting landscape compositions
  7. Understand where to use pen and how to create perspective in the landscape.


  • HB Pencil or clutch pencil 0.5mm HB
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Black Pigment Liners or Drafting Pens, water resistant 0.05mm NOT 0.5mm (Staedtler is one brand). Available from art shops.
  • White plastic eraser
  • Grey kneadable eraser
  • Watercolour Sketchbook OR Cold Pressed Watercolour 300GSM Paper (Please do not bring Cartridge or Drawing Paper to paint on). Canson brand is very good.
  • Compact Sketchers' Pocket Box Set (or similar)
  • If you have tube watercolours, bring these as well. Do not bring stacked palettes in round container
  • Water Brushes. Have reservoir for water and nylon brush, sizes medium, size small optional. Available at Art Shops – OR bring a variety of various sized sable or nylon brushes
  • Flat square brushes are useful for larger areas of wash
  • Small box Tissues

  • Cadmium Yellow
  • Yellow Ochre
  • Cadmium Red
  • Permanent Rose
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • Winsor Violet
  • Burnt Umber
  • Burnt Sienna
  • French Ultramarine
  • Cerulean Blue
  • Sepia
  • Permanent Magenta
  • Naples Yellow
  • Additional optional useful colours for greens: Indigo, Perylene, Sap Green

You do not need to have all these, they are suggestions and most will be in watercolour palettes. If you would like to use coloured pencil, bring a selection of colours. It does not matter if they are water soluble or not. These can be used for sketching, or in conjunction with watercolours and colours can also be purchased individually. Some useful green colours are:

  • Sap Green
  • Olive Green
  • Pine Green
  • Cedar Green
  • Apple Green

Black waterproof pens and waterbrushes will be available to purchase at nominal price.

IMPORTANT: Please arrive to the first class with all the relevant materials. A lack of materials is not just a handicap to you but to the ability to teach. Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.
