Poetry Sublime - Fabulous Poets and their Poetry

Poetry is indeed an art form and is a glorious expression of humanity’s intellectual, spiritual, moral and social personae. Examine the art of poetry by delving into the techniques, genres and periods of poetry from across the English-speaking world. This course is suitable for both the novice poetry student and poetry lovers alike.

This class will be delivered online via the online platform Zoom. Enrolling students need to ensure they have an email, a reliable internet connection, microphone/speakers and access to a tablet, smartphone or computer.


  • Introduction to Poetry – understanding and interpreting techniques and the wonderfully eclectic genres of poetry.
  • The origins and growth of poetry from the great poets like Sappho to Petrarch, Chaucer and Wyatt.
  • The flourishing of poetry in Britain under the penmanship of such artists as Shakespeare, Milton, Donne, Pope and Tennyson.
  • Romantic poetry and its imagery and skill through the works of the truly great Romantics including Blake, Wordsworth, Byron, Coleridge and Keats.
  • The Victorian poets from England and the Transcendentalists from America including Hopkins, Yeats, Emerson and Thoreau
  • Modernism and the twentieth century with the remarkable T. S. Eliot, Yeats, Hughes and Heaney
  • Poetry from across the continents including contributions from Plath, Tagore, Alvarez, Basho, Neruda, Slessor and Pound
  • Final reflections – the joy of poetry from diversity to much loved icons – a nod to the truly popular like Frost, Whitman, Wright, Dawe, Paterson.

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Identify the main styles, techniques and concerns of poetry.
  2. Read poems independently and be able to interpret the poetic techniques used.
  3. Understand and identify the differences between the poetry of the various eras.
  4. Discuss and evaluate the quality, topicality, mood and effectiveness of a variety of poems from a variety of poets.
