The course assumes you have completed approximately 190 hours tuition in Portuguese. It is for students who need to communicate with some fluency in Portuguese. Students will have the opportunity to focus on specific skills, such as extending vocabulary in given areas and improving the reading, writing, listening and speaking components of the language. Most of the class is conducted in Portuguese; conversation is the focal point of the first part of the lesson while the second part introduces new areas of grammar and vocabulary.

CONTENT
Conversational Portuguese and a review of cultural practices, with a focus on clear explanation of higher level language principles.

  • Understanding the health system and related vocabulary. Going to the doctor, the hospital, the local medical centre.
  • Shopping, buying, returning, paying methods, different businesses and shopping facilities, the rights of consumers
  • Cultural festivities, folk tales and regional traditions
  • The subjunctive (cont’d)
  • Relative pronouns
  • Double past participles
  • Homonyms synonyms and antonyms
  • Suffixes and prefixes
  • Revision of verb tenses, prepositions, possessives, object pronouns.


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Communicate in easily understood Portuguese in specific social contexts.
  2. Increase the skills, vocabulary and study attitude required for continued study of Portuguese.


IMPORTANT: Textbook cost is not included in the course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any textbooks. We therefore suggest you purchase your textbooks closer to the time of the course commencing.


LANGUAGE CLASS TRANSFER POLICY
If you are a new WEA Student and enrol into a language class and subsequently find that you are at the wrong level (whether too high or too low), you are permitted to transfer into another more suitable class at no additional cost, provided that the request is made within the first two classes and is in writing from your tutor directly to the Education Manager. After that point, an administration fee of $30 will apply.
