The Path to Modern Humans

The evolution of modern humans is a fascinating story that begins over 4 million years ago. There were triumphs along with devastating losses. In this course, you will be introduced to your family tree and become familiar with your distant and close relatives. We’ll see how they behaved and how, eventually, humans made it to every corner of the globe and beyond.

SUGGESTED READING

  • Evolution: the Human Story
  • The Origin of Our Species

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Our relatives: An outline of our primate relatives both extinct and extant species and their relationship to modern humans. This will cover prosimians, new world monkeys, Old-World primates and eventually apes. The phylogenetic relationship, anatomical and behavioural characteristics will be discussed.
  • What makes humans, human: The definition and characteristics of three key groups: hominoids (all apes), Hominids (great apes), Hominins (humans). And, further discrimination of Hominins into robust and gracile humans.
  • Robust hominins: Ancestral humans from 4-5million years ago to approximately 1 million years ago. What defines a robust human. Where were they found. What was their behaviour.
  • Gracile hominins: Ancestral humans from 4 million years ago to approximately 2 million years ago. What defines a gracile human. Where were they found. What was their behaviour.
  • The emergence of Homo: Begins around 2.5 million years ago to the present day represented by us: modern humans. What led to the evolution of Homo characteristics.
  • Modern humans: Where and when did they evolve. What key environmental pressures were key to developing modern human traits. Why were modern humans successful.

PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Outline who are primate relatives are and their phylogeny
  2. Define all key genus in hominid phylogeny
  3. Define and able to discuss characteristics of robust and gracile hominins.
  4. Know key characteristics of modern humans and how that lead to the species success.
