History of Popular Music: 1980 to 1984

In many ways the 80's were a return to the late 1960's. Melody and beautiful harmonies and lavish productions were back in style and the aggressive raw nature of punk had largely disappeared. Over five weeks we will explore the major artists of the early 80's from Kate Bush, Sonic Youth and Brian Eno to the less well known such as Tenor Saw, Virgo and Flipper using multi-media and open discussion about the stories behind the songs and artists.

COURSE OUTLINE

We will discuss one year per week through this period. We will watch and listen to the major artists of this period but more focusing on those that are less well known and had a key influence on the period. Most of us know the top hits so whilst we will cover some of these we will get more value from the course by going into material that's less well known but still powerful and influential. The course will be structured in open discussion format. It will use multimedia extensively: videos, interviews, film, and of course audio. We find that many of the participants are very knowledgeable about music and bring their own stories to share. This is encouraged.
