Popular Music: 1970 to 1974

Whilst the late sixties were the most creative in rock music, pop music continued to evolve into the seventies and beyond. We will play hear and listen to the music of this period. America, UK, Europe and Australia. We will cover one year per session starting with 1970 and a summary of the five years to come and then covering each year. We will not just cover the famous acts but also those less well known that still made an impact. We will look at many of the Australian acts of the time as well as those overseas. We will look at the advent of the music video and its history and development.

This class will be delivered online via the online platform Zoom. Enrolling students need to ensure they have an email, a reliable internet connection, microphone/speakers and access to a tablet, smartphone or computer.

PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. See how the 70’s progressed from the sixties.
  2. Understand the various musical styles of the period.
  3. See how music TV and video became increasingly important.
  4. Reflect on how this part of the 70’s shaped music to come.
