The 1989 Tiananmen Square Protests, known in China as the June 4th Incident, were student-led demonstrations that formed part of a popular national movement called the '89 Democracy Movement, which sought freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and a more democratic and accountable government. In this course, we will examine the social, economic and political factors that gave rise to the '89 Democracy Movement; the Tiananmen Square Protests and their tragic aftermath; and the subsequent development of the Chinese pro-democracy movement over the last thirty years. No previous knowledge of Chinese history is needed to benefit from this course.
