Rhetoric and Reality in the World of Politics

How can we explain the discrepancies between rhetoric and reality in all aspects of politics? The marked discrepancies are frustrating and debilitating for citizens, journalists, historians and policy analysts.


COURSE OUTLINE

  • Discussion of examples of differences between what politicians say and what they actually deliver in the name of public policy and government in the 21st century? Some e.g. include treatment of whistleblowers, hate speech/free speech debate, public school and TAFE funding in Australia and immigration/asylum seeking as a political/human rights issue
  • Media cycle and its influence on government policy making


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Appreciate the extent of the discrepancies between theory and practice in relation to various aspects of government by western democracies in the 21st century.
  2. Discuss the issues involved in determining which are reliable sources of news, information and political commentary in the 21st century.
