Ryszard Legutko: Totalitarian Temptations in Free Societies

Ryszard Legutko’s book of 2016, The Demon in Democracy: Totalitarian Temptations in Free Societies, reflects his personal battle against Soviet communism in his native Poland, and his subsequent discovery of worrying similarities of thought and practice in supposedly ‘free’ post-Communist liberal democracies. He provides a learned but accessible guide to the apparent contradictions of liberalism’s assault on liberty, democracy’s dismissiveness toward ordinary people, and the anti-politics of a world obsessed by politics. Legutko’s analysis emerges from his lived experience of the former Eastern Bloc’s entry into the European Union, but is equally relevant for all contemporary observers of Western democracy.
