"You can’t say that!" Political Correctness and the Culture War

Political correctness - friend or foe? This course takes a deep dive into this cultural phenomenon to understand why it is part of our daily vocabulary. How is political correctness used to shut down social dialogue? Find out how it affects you and the people you care about.

This class will be delivered online via the online platform Zoom. Enrolling students need to ensure they have an email, a reliable internet connection, microphone/speakers and access to a tablet, smartphone or computer.


  • Origins: Political correctness is a potent social force with a fascinating history. In this session we cover the timeline of PC - when it emerged, who used it and why, as well as the story of the backlash.
  • The Culture Wars: Who are the different sides in the culture wars? How were the moral tables turned to subvert political correctness? We will examine why political correctness has fueled such potent reactions and deep cultural divisions.
  • Impact of PC Culture on Democracy: In the third and final session, we look at how political correctness impacts on human communication, free speech and the way people exchange ideas. How is democracy surviving the culture wars?


By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Understand a powerful and often misrepresented cultural force.
  2. Understand the various positions people/groups take and why this has led to the culture wars.
  3. Identify the winners and losers in the culture wars.
  4. Identify when PC is being used as a method for undermining democracy.
