As the so-called Islamic Caliphate is collapsing, another chronic issue is re-emerging in the Middle East: the Kurdish question. The Kurds in Iraq have been autonomous for over 20 years, within the Iraqi Federation. The Kurds in Syria have declared The Democratic Federation of Northern Syria (Rojava), as a de facto autonomous region consisting of three self-governing cantons in northern Syria. The Kurds in Turkey do not control any territory; nevertheless a movement led by PKK but causes considerable problems. The potentiality of an independent Kurdish state, whether fragmented or unified is to be discussed in this lecture.
