Islam in France: Between Terror and Liberalism

An analysis of the recent events in France including President Macron’s decision to contain Islamic separatism in the French society through a bill to prevent and contain the growth of an "alternative Islamist society", the beheading of the French school teacher Samuel Paty after showing a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad in his classroom, and critical reactions from the Muslim world and key western presses and academics. Are we seeing a clash of civilizations in France? Or over politicization of Islam and Secularism?

This course will be delivered both face-to-face at WEA Sydney and online via the online platform Zoom simultaneously. Enrolling students need to ensure they have an email, a reliable internet connection, microphone/speakers and access to a tablet, smartphone or computer if they are attending via Zoom or have read the current COVID-19 Safety Guidance that WEA Sydney has put in place before enrolling into the face-to-face class.
