The United Nations, founded in 1945, is still the preeminent international institution. In this brief introduction, we will begin with a survey of the history of the UN, from the creation of its precursor organisation (the League of Nations) until today. We will then consider the various ways in which the UN seeks to fulfil the four purposes outlined in its Charter: “to maintain international peace and security”; “to develop friendly relations among nations”; “to achieve international co-operation in solving international problems”; and "to be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations in the attainment of these common ends."
