The European Union, founded in 1993, is Europe’s leading international institution. In this brief introduction, we will begin with a survey of the history of the EU, from the creation in 1950 of the European Coal and Steel Community until today. We will then consider the membership, purpose and structures of the EU, as well as the ways in which politics continue to influence the functioning and development of this powerful but controversial body. We will conclude with an examination of the Eurosceptic movement, and the extent to which it influences both European national elections, and the European Parliamentary elections.
