Wave-lashed islands of the North Sea, poised between Britain and Scandinavia geographically and historically, the Orkneys and Shetlands treasure their unique identity. Come along and discover the history of these beautiful and bleak islands, from the archaeology of the Mesolithic past, to the traces of Romans, Celts, and Picts, to the exciting years when Vikings farmed, sailed, and built along their shores. Has Scottish and English sovereignty over the last three hundred years entirely expunged those roots? Through the 20th century wars, and after, these small islands played a big part and let’s not forget the puffins!
