Oku-Noto Art Triennale Japan 2020

The inaugural Oku-Noto Art Triennale occurred in 2017. Oku-Noto is one of the most remote areas of Japan, centered around the town of Suzu in the far North of the Noto Peninsula. Suzu flourished from the 8th century when maritime trade across the Sea of Japan to China and Korea was active. As transportation shifted from sea to land Suzu’s remote location became a disadvantage and the current population of 15,000 is half that of 1954. The curator Fram Kitagawa has again stepped up to use art to bolster the culture and sense of worth of the citizens of this remote part of Japan.
