Narrative Photography - There is a Story in your Neighbourhood!

A compelling photo story can be about the simplest things in everyday life! This course will introduce you to the principles of narrative photography; how to find topics and apply composition elements and creative techniques. You will learn step-by-step how to build a narrative with your photos to portray aspects of your city, find themes in your neighbourhood or even create a photo essay in your own home. The presented principles can be applied to your travel photography later on.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Introduce a variety of genres in narrative photography, documentary and fictional. Show examples of relevant photographers practising in these areas.
  • Demonstrate the principles and formal elements of narrative photography and how to build or assemble a story with photos.
  • Discuss what themes and topics can be found in your city and neighbourhood to create a photo story.
  • Demonstrate composition elements and creative techniques.
  • Assess the results of the respective field excursions with emphasis on building a compelling photo story.
  • Discuss methods for showing completed photo stories: slideshow, photo book, blog and other internet output.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:
