Modelling Weather and Climate: What can it tell us in Changing Times?

Weather forecast models are getting better, as seen in their statistics. Climate models have a weather model at their heart, but of necessity also include models of the ocean, sea ice, and the biosphere. It is these models that we rely on the predict the future as greenhouse gas levels rise. How can we check their utility without waiting for the future to happen? The first test is how well they are able to reproduce the changes of the past century, at the same time confirming our belief that these changes have been driven by rising CO2 levels.
