Immerse yourself in the fascination, drama, tragedy, beauty and exultation of the Middle Ages and Renaissance by studying the life and work of several outstanding figures: the tragic lovers Peter Abelard and Eloise, the poet Chrétien de Troyes and the Parsifal legend, the anonymous Sir Gwain and the Green Knight, the music and poetry of Guillaume de Machaut, the artists Van Eyck, Van der Weyden, Memling, Van der Goes and their contemporaries.


COURSE OUTLINE

  • Peter Abelard and Eloise – the scholar and his pupil, his poems and their correspondence
  • Chrétien de Troyes – the poet and his work – Parsifal I
  • Chrétien de Troyes – Parsifal II
  • Sir Gwain and the Green Knight – the poem, its background and significance
  • Guillaume de Machaut – courtly poetry and music in 14th century France
  • Hubert and Jan Van Eyck – the International Gothic Style in the Netherlands, the Ghent altarpiece
  • Rogier Van der Weyden and Petrus Christus – the cities of Brussels and Bruges
  • Hugo van der Goes, Memling and Gerard David – the cities of Bruges and Ghent


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Situate each of these figures in their different environments
  2. Evaluate the importance of the contribution made by each figure to their society and to posterity
  3. Discuss some of the striking contrasts to be found in social life during the Medieval and Renaissance eras
  4. Develop a clearer overview of the developments and changes that occurred during this era
