The Masterpieces that Napoleon Stole – Where Are They Now?

Napoloeon died on 5 May 1821, and a current major Exhibition in Paris marks this 200 year Anniversary. One of the themes explored is his cultural legacy to France, including the Masterpieces of art that Napoleon stole as war booty in during his campaigns. In 1798, art recently looted from Italy was flaunted in the streets of Paris. Where is that art now? Some in the Louvre, in regional French museums and some returned. Napoleonic booty is even in British museums, when the British claimed it from the French as the spoils of war. Within the context of cultural restitution, we will explore the stories of this famous art, the journeys made, and where to see it now.
