Migrantenliteratur: German Migrant Literature

Since the 1960s the German literature has been affected and changed by migrant authors. Dealing in their works with the difficult process of integration, they have offered a new point of view over the German society and culture and have enriched the German literature with new innovative topics and new language features.


COURSE OUTLINE
The course will initially provide an overview over and a discussion of the complex topic of the German migrant literature (Migrantenliteratur):

  • Its development since the 1960s
  • The controversial discussion about its denomination
  • Its relation with the German literature and its influence over it
  • Its innovation in topics and language

Secondly, we will focus on the Syrian author Rafik Schami, who emigrated to Germany in 1971 and played a key role in the migrant literature debate. We will analyse some passages from his short stories, which offer an interesting, ironic and amusing point of view over the German society and culture and over the topic of migration and multiculturalism.


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Attain an overview over and discuss the topic of the German migrant literature and its most controversial aspects;
  2. Get to know the Syrian author Rafik Schami, his position about the Migratenliteratur and his poetics;
  3. Look at the German culture and society from a new, different and amusing point of view.
